architecture - Application server OR JVM with Sockets? -


i have been thinking system architecture , scratching head little. in previous job system based on multiple deployed java applications spring based , used sockets , proto buffers communicating between said services. no app server.

the place @ using swing client / spring , http invoker beans tomcat server in mix.

i trying decide solution correct 1 , if have design system scratch architecture best way.

maybe should considering other factors before deciding correct architecture.
