linker - What is a "Load Module"? -

i've been reading linking , loading (one of os topics, not specific language), , i've come across term "load module" without previous reference it. understand way has been used, seems final product after compilation , linking (an executable perhaps). tried google, term seems related cobol language , no specification specific cobol, so, i'm posting here know if of guys heard before , enlighten me it.

as per ibm's "mvs program management: user's guide , reference" load module is

an executable program stored in partitioned data set program library.

so right it's final output of binder (formerly known linkage editor) can executed z/os.

some additional remarks:

  • the term not limited cobol, binder-input object-modules can generated many of available compilers on z/os, i.e. c,cobol,pl/i, compiled rexx or assembler (where there no compiler assembler).
  • when strictly following definition important note term "partitioned data set program library" in above quote. executable program stored in pdse or z/os unix file called "program object". see "load module" used since many people use old term know , don't bother make difference (like using "linkage editor" when talking binder)
