google tag manager - What is risk of exposing PII information in dataLayer for GTM? -

for logged-in users on site, want expose customer email address , name in our datalayer each page gtm can push these variables various third parties via tags, such fullstory , intercom. make easier understand customer working when we're using third party systems.

i believe gtm not subject same pii concerns ga because pii data never moves client browser google.

however, there other significant risks around exposing pii information in manner? googling around, cant find indication of best practices information should/ shouldn't include in datalayer.

thanks!

any pii data push onto datalayer technically seen curious (and technical) user if motivated enough. data either directly visible on screen or reside in javascript variables or cookies. pushing data onto datalayer, may making more visible (all user have inspect datalayer see it). if worried this, can hash pii before pushing onto datalayer. ensure party eavesdropping between browser , 3rd party you're sending data cannot make use of it. of course not bullet proof , idea situation send pii 3rd party on https.
